'Lesbian' specifically refers to WLW, whereas 'gay' applies to all queer relationships. :) Strangely enough, while it encompasses all gay relationships, 'gay' is often used for MLM in conjunction with 'lesbian' for WLW. It's just one of those language things that seem to evolve a certain way.
